Gamma-ray Variability from Wind Clumping in Hmxbs with Jets
نویسنده
چکیده
In the subclass of high-mass X-ray binaries known as “microquasars”, relativistic hadrons in the jets launched by the compact object can interact with cold protons from the star’s radiatively driven wind, producing pions that then quickly decay into gamma rays. Since the resulting gamma-ray emissivity depends on the target density, the detection of rapid variability in microquasars with GLAST and the new generation of Cherenkov imaging arrays could be used to probe the clumped structure of the stellar wind. We show here that the fluctuation in gamma rays can be modeled using a “porosity length” formalism, usually applied to characterize clumping effects. In particular, for a porosity length defined by h ≡ l/f , i.e. as the ratio of the characteristic size l of clumps to their volume filling factor f , we find that the relative fluctuation in gamma-ray emission in a binary with orbital separation a

Massive Stars and their Compact Remnants in High - mass X - ray
In a high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) a massive star interacts with a neutron-star or black-hole companion in various ways. The gravitational interaction enables the measurement of fundamental parameters such as the mass of both binary components, providing important constraints on the evolutionary history of the system, the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, and the supernova m...
متن کاملAn XMM-Newton and NuSTAR Study of IGR J18214-1318: A Non-pulsating High-mass X-Ray Binary with a Neutron Star
IGR J18214-1318, a Galactic source discovered by the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory, is a high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) with a supergiant O-type stellar donor. We report on the XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations that were undertaken to determine the nature of the compact object in this system. This source exhibits high levels of aperiodic variability, but no periodic pulsations...

The polarization of relativistic jets is of interest for the understanding of their origin, confinement, and propagation. However, even though numerous measurements have been performed, the mechanisms behind jet variability, creation, and composition are still debated. We have performed simultaneous gamma-ray and optical photopolarimetry observations of 45 blazars with the Kanata telescope sinc...
متن کاملRelativistic Jets and Long-Duration Gamma-ray Bursts from the Birth of Magnetars
We present time-dependent axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the interaction of a relativistic magnetized wind produced by a proto-magnetar with a surrounding stellar envelope, in the first ∼ 10 seconds after core collapse. We inject a super-magnetosonic wind with Ė = 10 ergs s into a cavity created by an outgoing supernova shock. A strong toroidal magnetic field builds up in the b...

Context. INTEGRAL, the European Space Agency’s γ-ray observatory, tripled the number of super-giant high-mass X-ray binaries (sgHMXB) known in the Galaxy by revealing absorbed and fast transient (SFXT) systems. Aims. In these sources, quantitative constraints on the wind clumping of the massive stars could be obtained from the study of the hard X-ray variability of the compact accreting object....
